The best snacks strike a balance: salty and sweet, hearty and light, satisfying but never fussy. You want options that are low-maintenance, high-flavor, and built to handle long stretches of highway. So what are the true MVPs of snack time behind the wheel?

Let’s dig into the top travel-friendly foods that make every mile more delicious.

How to store foods

How to Store Foods

When it comes to storing food for a road trip, having the right containers and equipment can make all the difference. One of the best investments I’ve made for road trips is the YETI Roadie cooler. Not to be dramatic y’all, but this cooler is life-changing if you’re an avid road tripper. It’s rugged, reliable, and designed to withstand the rigors of the road. Its insulation is top-notch, ensuring that your perishables stay fresh no matter how hot it gets outside.

In addition to a quality cooler, it’s essential to have proper storage bins and organizers. Stackable bins can help you maximize space in your car and keep your snacks easily accessible. Consider getting car storage organizers that can be attached to the back of seats or placed in the trunk for better organization. Here are some suggestions:

To keep your foods in good condition during the trip, follow these tips:

  1. Pre-chill your cooler: A day or so before your trip, put your ice in the cooler to get it nice and cold. Making sure it’s cold before your food goes in helps it stay cold much longer! If you’re using bags of ice, this will mean purchasing an extra bag to get it  cold before anything else is added to it.  Then you’d dump that bag and add fresh ice and your food.
  2. Use ice packs: While bags of ice may be more convenient when you’re in a pinch, if you can invest in ice packs, it’s not only more economical but it’s also less messy than real ice.
  3. Pack smart: Place the most perishable items, like dairy and meat, directly on the ice packs. Use separate containers for items that need to stay dry.
  4. Keep it out of direct sunlight: Store your cooler in the shade or cover it with a blanket to keep it from heating up.
  5. Separate snacks for quick access: Keep a small bin or bag of snacks in the front of the car for easy access while driving. This can include non-perishable items like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruit.

If you are taking a family road trip, I’d highly consider bringing something “unique” in the sense that it isn’t something you’d eat normally. Making it special for the road trip will help your kids tie memories to it, and will always have them remember the trip fondly. For example, my road trip snack is rice crispy treats. I don’t have these in any other context than when I’m on road trips, and so it feels extra special when I get to have them.

By taking these steps, you can ensure that your road trip snacks remain fresh and delicious throughout your journey.

Convenient pick-up option

If you are flying to a destination and then renting a car, I would highly recommend placing a Target Drive Up order. This post is not sponsored in any way, but this is an option I’ve started using on every “destination” road trip and it has made my life SO much easier. While I’m sitting in the airport of my Point A, I am placing a Target Drive Up order at my Point B. When I land at my destination, I pick up my rental car and head straight to Target, have them load my snacks, and continue on my merry way!

I use Target, but you can use any grocery store that offers same-day pickup. If you’re used to using a specific service, obviously go with that; whatever you know to be reliable is the best option, even if it means driving an extra 15 minutes to get it.

Salty Road Trip Snacks

Alright, let’s get into the actual snacks! It’s essential to have a balance of snacks – not all savory, not all sweet. To kick us off, here are some ideas for salty snacks. They satisfy cravings, are generally less messy than sweet snacks, and can help keep your energy levels up during long stretches of driving. Here are some tried-and-true salty snacks that are perfect for the road:

  2. Goldfish Crackers: Perhaps I’m partial to this one because it is my absolute favorite snack, road trip or not, but these crackers are no-hassle and super tasty.
  3. Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, cashews, pistachios, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds are excellent sources of protein and healthy fats. They come in a variety of flavors, from plain to spicy, catering to different taste preferences.

These sweet snacks provide a variety of flavors and textures to enjoy on your road trip. They’re easy to pack, store, and eat while on the go, adding a touch of sweetness to your journey.

Soul-nourishing foods

“Soul-nourishing” foods are the ones that make your soul happy, even if there isn’t much nutritional value (and that’s okay!). Food doesn’t have moral value, but some may describe these as “bad” or “unhealthy.”  Remember there is no food police, and you should enjoy foods that make you happy. You don’t have to earn it! Anyone who tries to comment on your food choices during your road trip, you have my permission to toss them out the window. (The person who said it, not the yummy food they were condemning).

ANYWAY! What sort of soul-nourishing foods would I suggest packing?

  1. Peanut M&M’s: These colorful candies are a mix of chocolate and peanuts, offering a satisfying crunch. If you’re sensitive to food dyes, try the Unreal brand, which offers a similar taste with natural coloring.

Filling Snacks

A “filling snack” qualifies as anything that has all three major food groups and is designed to satisfy you until your next meal. They don’t necessarily have to be a meal in and of themselves, though they certainly can be. They do tend to need a little prep beforehand, so be sure to allot time if you choose to include these kinds of foods. Always listen to your body and fuel it how it needs. Here are some hearty and satisfying snacks to consider for your road trip:

  1. Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches: A classic choice that’s easy to make ahead of time and pack for the road. Use whole wheat bread for added fiber, and consider slicing the sandwich into smaller portions for easier eating.
  2. Turkey Wraps: Roll slices of turkey with cheese and lettuce or spinach in a tortilla or lettuce wrap. Add mustard or mayonnaise for extra flavor, and cut them into smaller rolls for convenient snacking.
  3. Chicken Salad: Prepare chicken salad with shredded chicken, mayo or Greek yogurt, celery, and seasonings. Pack it in a container and bring along some whole grain crackers or lettuce leaves for a refreshing and satisfying snack.
  4. Quinoa Salad Cups: Cook quinoa and mix it with your favorite vegetables like cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice, and pack them in individual containers for easy access.
  5. Hummus and Veggie Packs: A low-prep option, portion hummus into small containers and pack with carrot sticks, cucumber slices, and bell pepper strips. The combination of protein from hummus and fiber from veggies makes for a nutritious and filling snack.
  6. Bean and Cheese Quesadillas: Spread refried beans on a tortilla, sprinkle with cheese, and fold in half. Heat in a skillet until cheese melts and tortilla crisps. Cut into wedges for a savory and satisfying snack.
  7. Egg Salad Sandwiches: Hard-boil eggs, chop them up, and mix with mayo or Greek yogurt, mustard, and seasonings. Spread on whole wheat bread and cut into halves or quarters for easy eating.
  8. Stuffed Pita Pockets: Fill whole wheat pita pockets with your choice of protein (like grilled chicken or falafel), veggies, and a spread like hummus or tzatziki. They’re portable, customizable, and filling.
  9. Nut Butter and Banana Wraps: Spread almond or peanut butter on a whole wheat tortilla, place a banana in the center, and roll it up. Slice into rounds for a portable and satisfying snack.
