Georgetown is one of those picturesque, endearing neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. that is so fun to experience. I love it every time I go; the cobble-stone streets the rich culture and history contribute to the vibe of the beautiful city. Whether you’re a local looking for a day of fresh experiences or a savvy traveler eager to make the most of your limited time, this itinerary is designed to ensure you don’t miss a beat in Georgetown’s rich tapestry of culture and charm.
Getting There
Georgetown is not the most metro accessible destination, but I still recommend taking it and walking the rest of the way. I’ve found the bus system to be too fussy, plus the walk is enjoyable no matter which direction you come from.
If you’re arriving from Rosslyn, pick up a bagel from Bethesda Bagels before crossing Key Bridge. They arguably have the best bagels in the DMV! If you’re coming from Foggy Bottom, consider stopping at Tatte for one of their delectable pastries.
Things to do in Georgetown: Kayak on the Potomac
Start your morning off right by renting a kayak from Key Bridge Boathouse. At $24/hr, you can paddle along the Potomac past the Kennedy Center, Roosevelt Island, and more. Remember to bring sunscreen!
Renting from Key Bridge Boathouse is simple, and can be done entirely online in advance. They also offer season passes if you’re in the area for a few months! Check their website for terms and conditions.

What to do in Georgetown: Kittens and Whiskers Cat Cafe
All that paddling will work up quite an appetite! Book yourself an appointment at Crumbs and Whiskers to spend some time cuddling with kitties.
This cafe has around 25 adorable kittens to play with. They are all rescues, and all up for adoption! Between their two locations (this one in DC, and one in LA) they have saved over 4,000 kittens from euthanasia.
Their sister cafe, Levain, has hands down the best cookies in the city. Specifically, the chocolate chip walnut is my favorite. You have to give it a try! I also love their chocolate mint cookie, but it’s seasonal. Aside from cookies, they have a delicious assortment of breads and pastries, and of course coffee. You really can’t go wrong at Levain’s!
Take a walk in Georgetown Waterfront Park
The Georgetown Waterfront Park is one of my favorite urban parks. It is quite popular, and with good reason – the walk by the water is very serene and centering. With views overlooking Rosslyn, it’s also a decent spot for sunset viewing. It has rain gardens, pollinator gardens, and even a labyrinth. But my favorite thing to do is just to have a quiet stroll by the water.
Enjoy Afternoon Tea at Ladureé
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Laudreé is my all-time favorite bakery in Washington DC. I’m not a huge fan of macaroons, but at Ladureé? It makes my heart sing like nothing else!
Their hot chocolate is also to die for. I’m a hot chocolate connoisseur, if you will, and Ladureé’s has always been my favorite. It has the pricetag to accompany it though, unfortunately. But I will pay it every time. Do be aware, they sell out of it quite often – I’d say 40% of the time I’ve gone in and asked for hot chocolate, they’ve been out. If that’s the case, no worries, because everything else on the menu is still great, too.
Shop til you drop
If you’re into upscale shopping, Georgetown is the place to go. Aside from Tyson’s Galleria, it is one of the best places to shop in the DC area! M Street specifically is recognized as one of hte best shopping streets in the country. There is no shortage of boutique shops to peruse.
For clothing-specific stores, check out Washingtonian’s guide for all the deets. The only clothing store I’d add to this list is Rothy’s (which is conveniently next door to Ladureé, mentioned above).
There are art galleries and quaint bookstores that I’ve always been drawn to, and each time I go, they just make my heart happy. If you’re more of a spa gal, they have you covered there, too! For a complete list of shops in Georgetown, you can check out the Georgetown Business Directory.
Dinner The Piano Bar
One of the most lovely experiences in Georgetown is at The Piano Bar. If you can make it on a Wednesday night, they have an “open mic” of sorts, where you can play piano, sing, and perform to your heart’s content with friends. It’s really a wonderful experience!
That’s going to do it for this list! Did I miss any of your favorite Georgetown activities? Let me know in the comments!
