Basic information about Great Falls

Hours: Open 7am and closes 30 minutes after sunset. Closed Christmas Day.

Fees: Cost is $20 per vehicle, or free entry with your America the Beautiful pass. You can also purchase an annual park pass for $35.

Bathrooms: Available on the outside of the visitor center, and they are nice in comparison to other parks I’ve been to.

Pets: Pets are allowed, as long as they are on a six-foot leash. There are no off-leash areas in the park, so make sure to keep them leashed the whole time. It’s also important to note that they are prohibited from entering the Potomac River at any time.

Cell service: cell service is very limited. I wouldn’t count on having it in the main areas of the park, specifically in the parking lot and visitor center. I have been able to get a bar while on the River Trail, but not in any other parts.

Visitor Center: Every time I have gone, the visitor center has been closed. At the time of writing this, they are closed for repairs. Check the NPS website for the most up-to-date information. Though the visitor center is closed, the bathrooms remain open.

Know Before You Go

Trail conditions: Before hitting the trails, it’s essential to be aware of current trail conditions. Depending on recent weather patterns, some trails may be muddy or slippery, while others may be obstructed by fallen debris. In my experience, if it has rained in the past 1-2 days before my visit, I can expect to get pretty muddy along my favorite trails. Check the park’s website or inquire with park staff for the latest trail updates.

Wildlife: Great Falls Park is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, birds, and occasionally, snakes. I’ve seen 3-5 deer at a time while hiking the River Trail, so it’s quite common! Be mindful of your surroundings and respect the wildlife by observing from a safe distance.

Crowds: This park can get VERY crowded on holidays and nice weekends. Consider arriving early, or be prepared to wait in a long line to enter.

Where to eat

There is a Snack Bar that is open seasonally (click here to check if it’s open when you’re visiting). There are no vending machines. If you are driving, you can find endless options for food at Tyson’s Corner, about 15 minutes from Great Falls. Within the park there are numerous picnic tables and grills for visitors to enjoy. One of my favorite things to do as a solo hiker is to pack a small lunch or dinner and enjoy it from the cliffs overlooking the Potomac.

Leaving no trace: As you explore Great Falls Park, it’s important to adhere to the principles of Leave No Trace to minimize your impact on the environment. Pack out any trash you generate, stay on designated trails to avoid damaging fragile ecosystems, and respect wildlife by observing from a distance. By practicing Leave No Trace ethics, you can help preserve the beauty of Great Falls Park for future generations to enjoy.

Safety Tips

Before embarking on any outdoor adventure in Great Falls Park, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with safety tips and visitor guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

1. Stay Hydrated: Bring ample water to stay hydrated, especially during hot and humid weather conditions. Dehydration can quickly set in, leading to fatigue and heat-related illnesses.

2. Dress Appropriately: Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good traction for hiking and outdoor activities. Dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions, and don’t forget sunscreen and a hat to protect against the sun’s rays.

3. Know Your Limits: Be honest with yourself about your physical abilities and limitations. Choose hiking trails and outdoor activities that match your fitness level and experience, and don’t hesitate to turn back if you encounter challenging terrain or conditions.

Visitor Guidelines

4. Respect Wildlife: Observe wildlife from a safe distance and avoid feeding or approaching animals. Remember that you are a guest in their habitat, and disrupting their natural behavior can have negative consequences for both you and the animals.

5. Pack Essentials: Bring a backpack stocked with essential items such as a map, compass, or GPS device, first aid kit, snacks, and a flashlight or headlamp if you find yourself out after dark. It’s always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared when venturing into the wilderness.

6. Leave No Trace: Practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash and waste, staying on designated trails, and avoiding vegetation and wildlife habitat damage. Leave the park as you found it, or better yet, leave it even cleaner than you found it for the next visitors to enjoy.

7. Be Weather Aware: Monitor weather forecasts and prepare for changing conditions. Thunderstorms can develop quickly, especially during the summer months, so have a plan to seek shelter if necessary.

8. Stay on Designated Trails: Stick to designated trails to avoid getting lost or encountering hazards such as unstable terrain or poisonous plants. Venturing off-trail can also disrupt fragile ecosystems and contribute to soil erosion.

By following these safety tips and visitor guidelines, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in Great Falls Park for yourself and others. Now, let’s explore a sample one-day itinerary to make the most of your visit to this beautiful natural wonder.
